Case Studies
Deutsche Schule, London
Douglas Ritchie had a challenge. The library was adjacent to
reception, and was being used by 6th formers for study. It was fully
glazed and on full view of visiting parents. The room was a
small very irregular shape with a 300mm high wall around its perimeter,
so conventional furniture simply did not fit properly. The current
arrangement looked very messy.
This was the first impression prospective fee-paying parents would get
when they visited the school, and would clearly benefit from an upgrade.
Before: a room with a very irregular
shape
We carried out a full survey to the nearest millimetre using a
laser-measure. We drafted the room on-site using CAD software,
cross-checking dimensions from different positions to guard against
errors.
We went away and designed a bespoke suite using our 'Bench' product as a
start-point. We modified the frame work to fit around the half-wall, and
positioned the legs so that they didn't interfere with seating
positions.

sketch to help the governors to visualise the outcome
We decided to use very high-grade solid-core laminate for the desktops
thanks to its outstanding strength and ability to have edges CNC
machined to a fine finish. This choice of material allowed us to design a
completely unique set of irregularly shaped desktops that would fit the room like a glove.
This drawing accompanied a CADCAM dxf
file
which was imported directly into 3-axis CNC router
On site, we constructed the steel Bench framework and fitted the
desktops, which were a perfect fit for the room.
We sourced desktop USB & audio faceplates from the USA which we fitted
into the desktops.

We think the result speaks for itself.
